Common orthodontic appliances

Palatal expanders. These devices come in varying formats (such as molar rotation or overbite correction) depending on the requirements for the patient. Placed on the upper palate and cemented onto the molars, the palatal expander has a screw assembly located in the middle. The screw assembly is adjusted daily by the parent. This particular device is only effective for a growing individual.

Swartz expanders. These orthodontic devices are fitted in the lower jaw and adjusted either daily or once a week. They are is effective for patients of any age but work most effectively for those who are not yet skeletally mature.

Mouth guards, also known as mouth protectors, mouth pieces or gum shields, cover the teeth and gums and protects them from injury. They can be used as protective devices, as a treatment for bruxism, or involuntary gnashing of teeth, or as part of certain dental procedures, such as tooth bleaching. Mouth guards are also used as protection in contact sports.
